1962 Born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico

1983 – 1985 Studied photo with the master photographers Dominique Sudre and Susana Chaurand.

1985-1989 Freelance advertising photographer.
1989 Opens his own photo studio for advertising and fine art photo.

1992 Honorific mention in the Nikon's photo contest issue, at Tokyo, Japan.

1994-2002 Collaboration with museums, magazines and also in many art books.

1997 & 1999 Photographic specialization studies at the "Maine Photographic Workshops."

2001-2003 More photo workshops with master photographers like: Joan Foncuberta, Julio Galindo and many others.

1999-2002 Photography teacher at the Panamericana's University.

2004 Winner of a scholarship at the Vermont Studio Center.

2006-2008 Invitation from the “ Cabañas Cultural Institute” to develop a workshop on Fine Art photo.

2010-2016 Creating fine art, advertising and decorative photo also giving photography workshops at my studio.

Mi casa tiene alas ©

Sir Edward James fue un poeta, mecenas y coleccionista británico, conocido por su pasión por el surrealismo. En Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, México, creó Las Pozas, un jardín surrealista que fusiona la naturaleza con imponentes esculturas de concreto.

Construido entre 1960 y 1984, este espacio onírico alberga estructuras como escaleras que no llevan a ningún lado, arcos imposibles y pasadizos misteriosos, reflejando su fascinación por los sueños y la imaginación.

Tuve el gusto y el honor de estar trabajando ahí por cerca de dos años y medio fotografiando ese mágico lugar, para después imprimir todo el material con la técnica fotográfica más fina que existe, el paladio-platino, un proceso fotográfico del siglo 19.

FIJAR LO QUE NO SE PUEDE VER

Nunca lo repitiéremos suficientemente: la fotografía es, como el dibujo o la pintura, una forma de crear imágenes en dos dimensiones, es un medio de creación y no de reproducción como se creyó ingenuamente. En los principios de la fotografia se afirmaba que esta, nos devolvía exactamente la realidad.

En verdad, es otra mirada hacia el mundo. Se llego a comparar el ojo humano a una cámara fotográfica, pero es una aproximación engañosa. Recordemos algunas evidencias: el fotógrafo no es un pintor; el lente fotográfico no es un ojo humano y sin embargo este ultimo, no es, objetivamente efectivo.

El fotógrafo lo dirige y él obedece, y es pues a un mismo tiempo, que la imagen fotografica final dependa tanto del hombre cómo de la óptica.

Nada más simple que la fotografía: se mira a traves de un lente, se aprieta un botón y se obtiene una fotografia. Entonces quedamos satisfechos de poder llevar con nosotros la imagen de dos pequeñas asoleandose o de un paisaje en la orilla de un lago, ya sea porque conocemos a las dos niñas o por que nos gusto ese determinado lugar. Esto es todo lo que la mayoria de las personas tienen que hacer para obtener una imagen.

Pero sólo el arte sabrá retener a una audiencia y no sera por un asunto de sentimientos, pero si de calidad. Cuando una técnica está tan al alcance de todos, mas grande es el merito de extraer de ella algo excepcional. Asi pues, observen las fotografías de José Martínez Verea.

My House Has Wings ©

Sir Edward James was a British poet, patron, and collector known for his passion for Surrealism. In Xilitla, San Luis Potosí, Mexico, he created Las Pozas, a surrealist garden that merges nature with imposing concrete sculptures.

Built between 1960 and 1984, this dreamlike space houses structures such as staircases leading nowhere, impossible arches, and mysterious passageways, reflecting his fascination with dreams and imagination.

I had the pleasure and honor of working there for nearly two and a half years, photographing that magical place, and later printing all the material using the finest photographic technique—platinum-palladium, a 19th-century photographic process.

FIXING WHAT CANNOT BE SEEN

We cannot repeat it enough: photography is, like drawing or painting, a way of creating two-dimensional images. It is a medium of creation, not of reproduction as was naively believed. In the early days of photography, it was claimed that it reproduced reality exactly.

In truth, it is another way of seeing the world. The human eye was even compared to a photographic camera, but this is a misleading comparison. Let us remember some facts: the photographer is not a painter; the photographic lens is not a human eye; and yet, the latter is not objectively effective.

The photographer directs it, and it obeys. Thus, at the same time, the final photographic image depends as much on the human as on the lens.

Photography is one of the simplest acts: you look through a lens, press a button, and a photograph is taken. We are then satisfied to carry with us the image of two little girls sunbathing or of a landscape by the edge of a lake, either because we know the two girls or because we liked that particular place. That’s all most people need to do to obtain an image.

But only art will retain an audience, and not for emotional reasons, but for quality. When a technique is so accessible to everyone, the merit of extracting something exceptional from it is even greater. So, observe the photographs of José Martínez.
